Portland Real Estate

There's a little more proof that it's not all that fun to be on the buying end of residential real estate in Portland these days.

A new report from WalletHub shows that the Rose City is far down on a list of the best and worst cities for first-time homebuyers.

According to the report, which looked at 300 cities across the country, Portland landed at No. 229. The best city for first-time homebuyers was Overland Park, Kansas, while the worst, at No. 300, was Compton, Calif.

On a more refined list of 62 "large cities" — those with more than 300,000 people — Portland landed at No. 49, still well down near the bottom.

Renters in Portland are overall satisfied here in the Rose City, though their take on the daily commute and the economy is a little less enthusiastic.

According to the results, Portland renters gave their city a B+ for satisfaction and an A- for safety and crime rate. On the other hand, renters gave Portland's economy a C, with just 22 percent saying they believe the economy is on the right track. Renters gave the same grade to Portland's commute as well.

The survey also found that only half of Portland renters expect to purchase a home, a stat typically tied to confidence in the overall economy. That compares to the nationwide average of 60 percent who plan to buy, giving Portland a D in the category.
